In August, this application was turned down by Clare County Council who determined, in part, that the plan would have an adverse impact on the character of the building.

Bar One appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanala who have now upheld the Council’s decision.

Some of those who made observations include an ‘Ennistymon Residents, Parents and Business Owners Group’ who opposed opening a second bookmakers in the town, saying there is a risk of problem ambling, and the creation of a threatening anti-social atmosphere.

Another observer was TD Michael Harty who also pointed out the negative social and economic impact of gambling, especially on young people.

An Bord Pleanala have now endorsed the Council’s decision in refusing the application, saying it would be contrary to proper planning in the area.
