Bishop Kieran O'Reilly decided to defer the plan after it was met with opposition from women in particular, who felt angered that they weren't allowed to take part.

It now looks like it will be up to his successor to deal with it, however, after the Cork native was appointed as the new Archbishop of Cahel and Emly this weekend.

He'll be installed in that role in the New Year, and has been reflecting on the controversy over the Diaconate here.
