The Bishop of Killaloe has said the scandal at the site of a former mother and baby home in Tuam is an indictment on Church and State.

Bishop Fintan Monahan was based in the town for over 20 years before his appointment, and served for ten of those years as the Secretary of the Diocese of Tuam.

In an interview to be broadcast on Clare FM’s Morning Focus today (Tuesday), Bishop Monahan says the grim discovery should act as a stark warning to ensure the same mistakes are not repeated.

According to The Irish Times, the government’s considering expanding the scope of the inquiry in light of what’s emerged.

The UN warned yesterday that the current terms of reference of the investigation are too narrow.
