Bishop Elect Of Killaloe Looking Forward To Challenge

The New Bishop of Killaloe says he's looking forward to the challenge his new role will present.

Pope Francis confirmed the appointment of Father Fintan Monahan today, who takes up the role 18 months after the last Bishop of Killaloe, Kieran O'Reilly, left to become Archbishop of Cashel and Eml

Born in Tullamore County Offaly, Father Monahan eventually settled with his family in Galway City in 1996. 

He celebrates the silver anniversary of his ordination this year, having being made a priest in 1991 by Archbishop Joseph Cassidy.

Fr. Monahan is a former teacher at St. Jarlath's College in Tuam. 

He has was later appointed Chaplain and served as diocesan secretary of the Tuam diocese for ten years. 

A fluent Irish speaker, Fr. Monahan is recognised for his work in the area of communications, particularly digital media.

At 49 years old he will become the youngest bishop serving in Ireland. 

Meanwhile, Pope Francis has accepted the retirement of Martin Drennan, Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh, and Apostolic Administrator of Kilfenora.

The announcement was made today in Rome at 12 O'clock local time today.

In the 11 years since his appointment, Bishop Drennan has been at the forefront of a number of developments in the diocese including the founding of the Good Shepherd Parish at the east edge of Galway city

He also oversaw the reordering of parish boundaries and personnel throughout the diocese.
