The owners of a Belfast bakery have lost an appeal in a row over a cake supporting gay marriage.

Ashers bakery had refused to bake a cake with a slogan supporting same-sex marriage, on the grounds that it clashed with their Christian beliefs.

This morning the Court of Appeal in Belfast has upheld an earlier ruling against the shop – saying that the company could not choose customers according to their religious beliefs.

Daniel McArthur, who runs the bakery, says it will mean businesses now have to promote things against their own conscience – and thanked the people who had sent messages of support.
