Barry To Seek Sentence Reduction

A retired West Clare primary school principal is due back in court later as he looks to reduce his jail term for the indecent or sexual assaults of former pupils.

Patrick Barry of Well Road, Kilkee lost an appeal on Monday against his conviction for molesting 11 girls over a 21 year period.

The 80-year-old former principal of Moyasta National School is serving a six year jail sentence for sexually assaulting pupils there between 1964 and 1985.

On appeal, Patrick Barry's legal team argued the specifics of the charges were vague and that adverse rulings by the trial judge rendered the verdicts unsafe.

The Court of Appeal dismissed his case on all grounds and today the 80-year-old's lawyers will argue for a reduction of his sentence at a further hearing.
