Barry To Launch Court Appeal

A former West Clare principal, convicted of sexually assaulting 11 young girls over a 21-year-period, is due to launch an appeal in court today.

In November, 80-year-old Patrick Barry of Well Road, Kilkee was sentenced to eleven years in jail, with the final five years suspended, after he was found guilty of 59 counts of indecent assault on dates between 1964 and 1985.

At the time, the former principal of Moyasta National School was described as being "like a vicious wolf" by one of his victims.

Today, Barry's case is due before the Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin where he is to make an application for bail.
