219 boys and 202 girls were born to Clare mothers in the first three months of this year.

This total number of 421 is up from 396 in the same time last year.

The 6% increase comes in spite of a drop in the figure nationally.

The average age of first-time mothers here is just over 30, while two-thirds of all births were to married mothers.

Meanwhile, there were 243 deaths recorded in Clare between January and March.

135 of those who lost their lives here were male, while Diseases of the Circulatory System were the most common cause.
