Bail Bid Is Refused

A former West Clare school principal convicted of indecently assaulting eleven girls has been refused bail as he seeks to appeal against his conviction.

80-year-old Patrick Barry of Well Road, Kilkee appeared before the Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin yesterday, three months after he was sentenced to an eleven year jail term, with five years suspended, having been found guilty of 59 counts of indecent assault on dates between 1964 and 1985.

His application for bail was refused, however, after Mr. Justice Seán Ryan said the former principal of Moyasta National School had not raised a point of law for the purposes of his application.

The judge said this was not intended to adjudicate on Barry's prospects in the appeal, and the case will return before the court next month.
