As part of this investigation, Clare FM compared every airline operating flights to and from Shannon with their counterparts in Dublin.

However, of the 26 destinations on offer from the regional airport, four routes depart from Dublin on different days and were eliminated from our analysis due to the potential for this to impact on costs.

Of the 22 remaining holiday spots, we compared the price of a return ticket on flights of peak popularity within the first two weeks of May and selected the cheapest option on offer from both airports.

The majority of flights from Shannon were more expensive than from Dublin – with 17 destinations clocking higher ticket prices.

The largest price discrepancy in flying from Shannon Airport came on the Birmingham route, with it being 80% dearer to depart from Shannon than the capital.

In contrast, Dublin charged nearly double the price of a return flight to Budapest in comparison to the Clare airport.

Overall, the cost of flying locally was only marginally higher than travelling from Dublin airport – with the average difference coming in at €22.70.

However, when other factors such as the cost of travelling to and from each airport as well as the price of parking are taken into consideration, Shannon Airport proves to be a viable option.

The findings come in light of recent staffing issues at Dublin Airport caused huge delays and led to many missing flights, which leaves Shannon Airport with the potential to market itself as a competitive alternative.
