August Fall In Clare’s Dole Queues

Nearly 200 people left Clare's dole queues last month.

New figures from the CSO show there are 8,597 people signing on the live register here, and that this is 1,016 less than the figure at the same point last year.

Ennis accounted for nearly three-quarters of the overall reduction in August (148), followed by East Clare (31) and North Clare (17), though West Clare saw a fall of only 3.

The figures come as IBEC warns the Government that unnecessary austerity in the Budget will add to unemployment rates.

The group has published its latest consumer monitor today and says rising employment, strong consumer sentiment and recovering retail sales are all pointing to a solid recovery in the domestic economy.

It says this shows that the Finance Minister can ease up on savings in next month's budget, even though Michael Noonan has already signalled he wants to get the deficit below three per cent next year.
