Athenry community numbed by Ennis Road tragedy

A young County Galway woman killed in a road crash on the outskirts of Ennis has been named locally as Vicky Courtney from Athenry.

The 26 year old along with her mother Pamela  were travelling home from Shannon Airport  just before 4 yesterday afternoon when their red Peugeot 307 hit the central median and careered off the road near Barefield.

Vicky- who would have celebrated her 27th birthday this week – was pronounced dead at the scene while her mother is being treated for non life threatening injuries at Limerick Regional Hospital.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was on the M18 at the time and either witnessed the crash or who may have seen the Peugeot prior to the collision to contact them at 065 6848100.

Athenry Fine Gael Councillor Peter Feeley says locals are devastated by the tragic accident describing Vicky as being from a well known and long established family in the area.
