And it's not the only jobs announcement today – recruitment website Indeed is creating 300 new positions in Dublin.

It's been a huge day on the jobs front for Ireland.

Tech giant Apple has announced one thousand new positions at its European headquarters in Cork, where it already employs 5,000 people – and CEO Tim Cook has flown in specially for the occasion.

It's also rumoured U2 will be on hand to provide the entertainment at the event in Hollyhill this evening.

Meanwhile, recruitment website Indeed has announced 300 new jobs in Dublin.

The roles are in sales, client services, finance and marketing.

Speaking at the Indeed launch, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny was – perhaps unsurprisingly – in jovial form.

Meanwhile, Tim Cook has taken full advantage of his time in Ireland.

He's addressed the Phil Soc at Trinity College Dublin this morning and took part in a lively q and a with students.

On the subject of LGBT rights, he commended Ireland for the marriage equality vote and said when he became CEO he realised he could help some people by being more open about himself.

On privacy, he said Apple isn't interested in people's personal data – and they're not trying to make money off the juicy things in people's lives;

He gave CV advice; dealt with requests for discounts on iPads; and after a flurry of selfies, he was gone – luckily for him, without one question about Apple's controversial tax arrangements with Ireland.
