The Aontú MidWest PRO is hopeful that reaching ‘crisis point’ in teacher shortages will spur the Department of Education to act on union’s wishes.
A proposal that teachers may be stopped from taking career breaks quickly garnered criticism during the week, before a spokesperson for Minister for Education, Norma Foley, clarified that no such measure was on the table.
Instead, there are plans to evaluate non-statutory leave, as principals across the country are reporting difficulties in securing substitutes.
Eric Nelligan, who’s also a primary school teacher, says both short-term and long-term measures need to be taken to prevent shortages into the future.
