The ISPCA had been running the facility, but fears are now being expressed that a tender for the service will now go to a Cork-based company.

Four Seasons Promotions Ltd., trading as ACS, is believed to be in the running to take over the county dog pound which has been run by the ISPCA, with Frankie Coote as the county's dog warden for the past 15 years.

ACS is understood to have competed in a tendering process, and the Council insists no decision has been made on who will be awarded the contract.

However Clare FM understands that at least one bidder has been informed that they have been unsuccessful.

Frankie Coote says he was warned of the change last week, as well as the threat to his job.

ACS has been unavailable for comment today, but welfare groups have expressed concern that the change could be bad for animals here.

Local representatives have also expressed concern about the expected change, including the Mayor of Ennis.

Councillor Pat Daly says it's essential that the current arrangements are maintained.
