Almost €2.8 Million Paid Out In Compensation Against Clare County Council

Nearly 2.8 million euro has been paid out in respect of compensation claims against Clare County Council.

The payouts have been made since the beginning of 2014, and come as a total of 220 claims have been made against the local authority during this time.

Issues with footpaths, potholes and slips and trips account for over 60% of the claims made against Clare County Council in the last three years.

The local authority has told elected representatives that in that same timeframe, 2.78 million euro has been paid out in respect of legal claims.  

There's no indication of how many claims have been successful during this time.

The money in question comes from IPB, the insurer of local authorities.

However, in the same time, premiums paid to this group by Clare County Council have amounted to nearly 3.1 million euro, an amount greater than the payouts themselves.

Legal feels account for an estimated 40% of the payouts, or over 1.1 million euro.
