Almost 8,000 cases of abuse of vulnerable adults were reported to authorities last year, according to figures released by the HSE.
Physical abuse made up almost half of these reports, while psychological was the next more common form.
The HSE’s National Safeguarding Office has launched a campaign to raise awareness among members of the public about what constitutes as abuse.
