A planning application has been lodged with Clare County Council today for a 1,000 square meter ALDI store at the Westpoint Retail Park, on the Kilrush Road in Ennis.

If given the green light, 30 new permanent jobs will be created at the store, with up to 50 jobs supported during the construction phase.

It will be Aldi’s second store in Ennis, with its supermarket on Francis Street open since June 2005. The German supermarket chain also operates three further shops in Ennistymon, Killaloe and Kilrush.

As part of the plans, the new environmentally friendly store in Ennis will be powered by 100% green electricity, while there will be 96 dedicated customer car parking spaces provided and four electric vehicle charging points.

The new store, which is slated to open in 2023, will be part of a mixed-use development which will also feature other retail units and a health centre.

In a statement to Clare FM, Aldi’s Regional Managing Director Colin Breslin has said their Francis Street store is one of their busiest and most popular stores in the country and they look forward to serving more Ennis shoppers.

In 2020, Aldi sourced €2.8 million of locally produced food and drink from Clare-based suppliers.
