Aid relief efforts continue in New Zealand following two major earthquakes there over the weekend.

The first 7-point-8 magnitude tremor struck north-east of Christchurch on Sunday night local time, with a second 6-point-2 quake nearby hours later.

At least two people have been killed and heavy rain and strong winds are hampering the efforts of aid workers and emergency services.

Kilmurry native Mary O'Callaghan, who's in Wellington, says the South Island town of Kaikoura has been particularly hard-hit.
