New Clare IFA Chair Targeting Younger Farmers

The new Clare Chair of the IFA insists the association needs to reach out to the next generation to secure the future of the farming sector.

Parteen suckler farmer Tom Lane takes over the reigns from Doonbeg’s Willie Hanrahan, having been elected to the position at their AGM this week.

The ageing profile of farmers continues to cast a shadow over the industry, with a review of the Irish Agri-Food sector for 2020 revealing that just 5.9% of farmers are under the age of 35 – a figure which continues to shrink.

This contrasts with 41.2% over the age of 65 and Tom says it will be a top priority to ensure longevity for the sector now.
