More Affordable Housing Needed For “Squeezed Middle” Trapped By Rising Rents In Clare

A Clare-based mother has expressed fear that she and her eight children will soon be homeless over the shortage of accommodation in this county.

Daniella Kinsella is working in the county and says she can afford to rent, but is currently living in a 30-year-old mobile home, which has only one bed, as she can’t find landlord that will accept a family of her size.

She’s over the income threshold to qualify for social housing and as she’s not on the social housing list, Tusla are unable to help find her accommodation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by friends of Daniella’s which has helped her to secure enough money to pay for up to a year in advance, but she’s has told Clare FM’s Morning Focus that regardless, no-one will help her.

Clare saw one of the highest rent increases in the country over the past year, according to the latest RTB figures, and the Chair of Clare County Council’s housing committee believes this is putting too much pressure on middle income earners in particular.

Under the Government’s Housing For All plan, the contributions by developers to social and affordable housing on developments will increase from 10% to 20%.

But Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that it looks like Clare won’t qualify for affordable housing, something he believes must change.
