A move to try to demolish Achill Island’s answer to Stonehenge is before the High Court today.
The developer behind the unusual structure is Joe McNamara, who is from Achill but has an address in Salthill, Galway.
He was previously arrested for driving a cement mixer up to Leinster House in protest at Anglo Irish Bank.
Mayo County Council claims the Stonehenge type structure is in breach of the county development plan.
Nobody seems sure as to what it actually is but the council wants it removed and it’s asking the High Court to make the necessary orders.
They say it’s very close to archaeological remains and they want the demolition supervised by an ecologist and licensed architect.
The developer is Joe McNamara, – he believes the structure dubbed ‘achill-henge’ is exempt from planning regulations.
It seems he’s previously suggested that what he’s building is a place of reflection.
