New figures from the CSO show almost 69 thousand live births were recorded in 2013 to mothers with an average age of 32.

35 thousand of these were boys and 34 thousand were girls.

That's a four per cent decrease on the 2012 figure but is 12 per cent higher than a decade previously.

The CSO says the number of twins born has increased dramatically over the past 20 years from 11.8 per cent in 1993 to a high of 18.7 per cent in 2013.
