While there has been much discussion on issues in the pubs industry, this new research published by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland highlights the extent of these issues.

Its figures refer to pubs only – hotels and off licences are excluded – and in the 12 years from 2005, 83 pubs closed across Co. Clare.

That’s a drop-off of 22% – only five counties have a higher figure.

All counties have experienced a drop, but it’s much lower in Dublin and surounding counties, suggesting the issue is particularly acute in rural areas.

Despite these closures, there is still one pub for every 410 people living in Co. Clare.
