New research carried out by LetsGetChecked shows that 68 per cent of men and 54 per cent of women in Munster are unaware of the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases.

The start-up company says it appears that a stigma around discussing sexual health and getting tested remains in the region with only a third of people admitting to having a frank conversation about the issue with new partners.

According to the figures, almost ten thousand people in Ireland were diagnosed with an STI last year, with Chlamydia remaining the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease.

This compares to over 6,700 cases in 2014.

Research shows that the majority of people diagnosed are between the ages of 20 and 24 with 54 per cent of females contracting the infection and 46% of males.
