More than 530 applications for the Help-To-Buy scheme have been approved in Clare since it began.

The number of successful applications in this county jumped by 60 percent last year compared to 2020 levels.

The Help To Buy incentive was first introduced in 2017, and is a tax refund scheme designed to help first time buyers get the deposit needed to buy a newly built home.

Applicants can claim a maximum of 10 percent of the value of the property or €30,000, whichever is lower.

Figures released to Clare Fine Gael Deputy Joe Carey by the Department of Finance show more than 7,500 applications to the scheme were approved in 2021 alone.

166 of these, or around 2 percent of the total figure, were approved in Clare.

That compares to 104 the year prior, which is a near 60 percent jump, and 2021’s approvals were nearly three times higher than during the first year of the scheme back in 2017.

The expanded Help-to-Buy scheme rate of €30,000 is scheduled to run until the end of this year, though it appears likely based on these numbers it’ll be extended beyond that.
