The number of people claiming some form of unemployment benefit in Ennis has jumped by 5% in a year.
The latest figures from the Central Statistics Office show the county town is the only part of Clare to see an increase in Live Register figures in August.
The latest CSO figures appear to indicate the level of unemployment peaked in July in Clare, with numbers reducing across the county again in August.
3,879 people signed-on at one of the county’s four social welfare offices last month, down from 4,018 in July.
It also represents 210 fewer people in the dole queues, compared to the same month last year.
Ennis was the only part of the county to record an increase in numbers year-on-year, however, with 2,208 claiming unemployment benefit, up from 2,084 in August 2024.
On the flip side, North Clare saw it’s numbers reduce by a third in the space of a year, with 534 people singing on last month, compared to 808 in the same month last year.
In West Clare, Live Register figures reduced by 39, while in East Clare the number dropped by 21.
