From July until the end of September, there were just under 2,000 criminal offences recorded in total in Clare.

That’s up almost 150 on the same period last year or an 8.1% rise.

Among serious crimes, it was burglaries that saw the biggest rise – in Quarter 3, there were 85 reported in Clare, up from 61 in the third quarter of 2017 or a 39% jump.

Theft and related offences also rose somewhat significantly to 264, from 229 this time last year – a 15% rise.

Disorderly conduct and public order offences are up 9 and 10% respectively; while the number of sexual offences remained stagnant.

It means Clare is bucking the national trend, with the number of sexual offences across the country rising by nearly 12% in Quarter 3 but the number of burglaries dropping significantly.
