CBS Secondary School, Scoil Mhuire and Ennistymon Vocational are to amalgamate to form a single community school which will open in 2018.

It's one of eleven projects across the county, announced under the Government's multi-million euro School Building Programme.

Nine primary and two secondary schools in Clare will benefit from the Government's New School Building Programme which has been announced by Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan today.

The six year capital plan aims to end the long-term use of prefabs in schools by 2021 and will see two-point-eight-billion euro invested in 310 school building projects nationally.

Construction is due to get underway on a new school building for Sixmilebridge National School next year.

While in 2017, work will begin on projects for CBS National School, Scoil Chríost Rí and Ennis Community College in the county town, as well as Ennistymon National School and the new Ennistymon Post-Primary School.

Thirteen million euro will be spent on this project, which involves the amalgamation of the CBS Secondary School, Scoil Mhuire and Ennistymon Vocational school.

Ennistymon Senator Martin Conway hopes that students will be able to enroll in the school in two years time.

Principal of Scoil Mhuire, Seosaimhín Uí Dhomhnallán has been involved in the campaign for a new school for the past thirty years.

She says it will make a huge difference to the entire community:

Elsewhere, the government says contractors will begin work on Ennis Educate Together National School in 2018.

Gaelscoil Donnacha Rua in Shannon and Gaelscoil Ui Choimin in Kilrush, Raheen Wood Steiner National School and Mol an Óige Steiner National School will also benefit from the multi-million euro investment.

No date has been specified for these projects but the Government says that work will be complete between 2019 and 2021.
