A new report has found more than 300 individuals and groups were declared homeless in Clare last year.
The figure is contained in a new plan for the Mid West which aims to reduce homelessness across the region.
The Mid West Regional Homelessness Action Plan, drawn up by local authorities from across the region, has revealed there were 304 homeless presentations in Clare last year.
There is no recorded figure for the number of people involved – the presentations can comprise of an individual or family groups – but the figure is up from under 250 in the previous year.
Domestic violence, a breakdown of independent living arrangements and family disputes are cited as the key reasons for why people sought help. Over a third of those who did so were provided with emergency accommodation by the St. Vincent de Paul or Clare Haven Services, while a quarter were placed with family or friends.
The Action Plan outlines ways in which it’s hoped homelessness can be addressed, including strategies to eliminate the need for people to sleep rough and the provision of adequate housing and supports. It’s due to be ratified by Town and County Councils at their meetings this month.
