250 jobs for Galway and Dublin

250 new jobs have been announced for Dublin and Galway.

200 of the positions will be at business software company while another 50 people will be recruited to work at a new casino in north Dublin.

The bulk of the positions are set to be announced by business software company SAP later.

The firm that currently employs 55,000 people around the world.

1,200 of those work at sites in Dublin and Galway.

200 more are now expected to be recruited across three sites.

Meanwhile the opening of a new casino at Airside in Swords will create 50 new positions.

The Penthouse Casino and Card Club is part of the KaiRo International entertainment firm.

It is to begin recruiting immediately for casino staff including croupiers and security personnel.

The company says it will increase the initial 50-strong workforce to 70 over the next 6 months.

It is part of a 2 million euro investment in Ireland.

The positive jobs news comes a day after news that the number of people signing on fell by more than 9,000 people in the year to the end of April.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton says she is working to ensure workers have the skills required by international investors but the government knows that smaller businesses need support too.

"For instance retraining people like construction engineers, architects, to transfer into the areas where there’s demand for labour – IT, medical devices and pharma" she said.

"In terms of the new investments we’re doing very well; Apple the 500 jobs, Paypal 1,000 jobs in Dundalk".

"But what we have to do then is try and spread that as well to the small and medium sector of start-ups" she added.
