A 25-year old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with murdering his mother in Cork city this week.
Paul Horgan has been charged with murdering Marian Horgan at Murmont Avenue, Montenotte last Monday morning.
A group of about 50 people were standing outside the Washington Street courthouse to watch Paul Horgan being escorted away by gardai.
The 25-year old – who is an IT student at Cork College of Commerce – was arrested shortly after 8 o'clock last Monday morning outside the family home at Murmont Avenue in Montenotte.
He was brought to Mayfield Garda Station where he was formally charged with murdering his 61-year old mother Marian Horgan and he made no reply to the charge.
He was brought here to Cork District Court this morning where his solicitor was granted free legal aid because he is a student.
Judge Leo Malone remanded him in custody to appear again in court next Tuesday.
He also directed that the accused – who was dressed in a white shirt and jeans – be psychiatrically assessed while in custody.
Marian Horgan was pronounced dead at her home last Monday morning – a post mortem examination confirmed that she had been stabbed.
