22 Water Scheme In Clare Found To Have High Levels Of Environmental Pollutant Last Year

22 water schemes in Clare were found to have high levels of an environmental pollutant last year.

The EPA has today published it’s Drinking Water Quality in Public Supplies Report for 2021, which has found that drinking water quality across the country is high.

It warns that increased vigilance is needed by Irish Water and Local Authorities, however, to protect public health.

The EPA’s annual report has found that over 99.7% of public supplies across the country were in compliance with bacterial and chemical limits in 2021.

The Environmental Protection Agency says the continued high levels of water quality being achieved are positive for consumers and indicate that water is safe to drink.

However, it’s noted a number of areas where improvement is needed, in the interest of public health.

16 schemes fed by the West Clare Regional Water Supply were found with exceedances of Trihalomethane, which can cause health risks with long term exposure.

The EPA issued a Direction to Irish Water to resolve the THM issue and Irish Water has substantially progressed works, with an expected completion date this year.

An additional 6 schemes fed by the Sixmilebridge Regional Water Supply were also found to have THM failures last year.

The report also notes that there was a water restriction notice in place for the Shannon/Sixmilebridge RWSS between August 7th and 17th of August last year, affecting a population of almost 7,650 people, after samples were found to contain Manganese.

Corofin also remained on the EPA’s remedial action list in 2021, with an upgraded water treatment plant promised by June of this year.
