Clare has seen a 20 percent jump in the number of Ukrainian refugees in the county since the beginning of August.

New CSO figures show 3,216 people from the war torn-state are living locally.

The CSO publishes monthly data on arrivals from Ukraine based on those who have received PPS numbers from the Department of Social Protection.

The figures show 3,216 Ukrainians have come into Clare since the conflict began there back in February, which is up by more than 500 since the beginning of August.

Based on PPS number allocations, 1,411 people, or more than 40 percent of Clare’s total refugee numbers are based in the Ennistymon electoral area.

734 are living in the Ennis electoral area, with 680 based in Shannon and its environs, which has seen a near doubling of numbers in the past two months.

There are 337 people from the war-torn state in the Kilrush area, while 54 have made their homes in the Killaloe district.

It means as of September 25th, just over nearly 6 percent of all Ukrainian arrivals to Ireland are based here in Clare.

Meanwhile, a professor of politics at the region’s largest university campus believes the winter may see significant gains for Ukraine’s army.

It comes as Ukrainian forces are reportedly recapturing towns this morning within the regions which Russia claimed last week to have annexed.

Ukrainian soldiers have also removed Russian flags from the centre of Lyman – an eastern city they liberated over the weekend.

Professor of Comparative Politics at the University Of Limerick, Neil Robinson, says Russia’s resources might not be up to scratch as the weather gets colder.
