20% Increase In Number Of Clare Secondary Students Enrolled In Past 15 Years

The number of second level pupils enrolled in Clare schools has increased by 20 percent in the last 15 years.

8,660 students are attending secondary schools in this county in 2021.

The number of students enrolled in second level schools in Clare is now the highest on record, with the Central Statistics Office having keeped data on the matter since the year 2000.

That year there were 8,210 students in Clare secondary schools – that number decreased to a low point of 7.264 in 2005.

After that, most years have seen an increase, with an extra 1,396 students now at the desks of post-primary facilities in this county compared to back then.

The number has increased by 450 pupils – or more than 6 percent of the 2005 total – in the last five years alone.

The CSO also provides data on the nationality of the students attending, and as of this year, around 90% – or around 7,800 – of them are considered Irish.

145 students are from the UK, 75 are from Asia, 61 are from the US or Canada, 36 are from Africa and 10 are from Australia, with the others from different European countries.

Clare has the lowest number of second level pupils in Munster by quite a distance as of this year – nearly 1,000 less than Waterford’s 9,547 students.
