The number of applications for Supplementary Welfare Allowance in Clare has dropped by 20 percent in the first two months of the year.
Figures released through the Oireachtas show 469 such applications were made in this county in January and February, compared to 586 in the same timeframe last year.

The SWA payment is made by the Department of Social Protection to people who do not have enough income to meet their needs and those of their families.
The number of Exceptional Needs Payments distributed to people in Clare also fell by 15 percent to the end of February.
