19 Clare Schools Earmarked For Closure In Government Review

It's emerged that 19 schools in Clare were earmarked for merger as part of a Government review.

Today's Irish Times reports that Clare had the fourth highest number of possible closures of any county, behind only Maro, Galway and Cork.

Most of those were in West Clare, and included thelikes of Clohanes, Doonaha, Labasheeda and Cross, as well as the likes of Boston and Tubber.

The report, which looked at reducing costs and supporting educational goals, observed that "There is no evidence that small schools provide any greater educational benefits for their pupils."

However, the plans were scrapped earlier this year and the Times reports that Enda Kenny’s personal opposition is understood to have been key to this rejection.
