Ennis Town Council is set to spend around 170,000 euro on saving a 400 year old chimney on top of the oldest building in Clare County Town.
The McParland site on Parnell Street has been derelict for around three years, and a report from the local authority has found that that it is structurally unsound.
The site is privately owned, but the owner cannot afford the repair works, meaning they will have to be undertaken by the local and are set to get underway in the very near future.
85,000 euro of the cost is to be covered by a government grant, and the council can secure the debt against the site should it be sold at a later date.
Some local representatives questioned spending tens of thousands on the Jacobean Chimney – but Labour Councillor Paul O’Shea is welcoming the development, which he says is long overdue
