More than 170 horses have been seized or impounded in Clare since 2015.
Figures released to the Oireachtas show the number has steadily declined in recent years, having stood at 47 back in 2019 but fallen as low as six last year.

Local authorities such as Clare County Council have the power to prohibit horses in certain areas, as well as the issuing of licences and the seizure of horses in contravention of the Control of Horses Act.
While 477 horses have been seized nationwide so far in 2022, none of these have been recorded in county Clare.
