17 Million For Repairs On Clare’s Storm-Ravaged Coast

€16.8m has been allocated for storm repair works along Clare's storm-ravaged coast.

The money has been given to Clare County Council who have welcomed the announcement, though it falls significantly short of the €36.8m estimated cost of the bad weather in January and February.

Just over 16.2 million euro has been given to the Council by the Department of the Environment for repairs to local authority infrastructure damaged during the recent bad weather.

The funding has been earmarked for works on roads, piers and harbours, coastal protection repairs and tourism infrastructure.

The Department has also announced a one-off allocation of €608,878 to Clare County Council, covering costs that it has already racked up in carrying out repairs.

The money has been awarded after Clare County Council outlined the extensive damage caused to communities along the county's coastline, including New Quay, Doolin, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Kilkee and Kilbaha.

The total estimated cost of damage initially stood at €23.7m, and rose to nearly €37m after Storm Bridget at the beginning of this month.

The Council says it's hopeful of further funding allocations, but says this announcement will allow significant works to begin.
