17% Drop In Clare People Claiming Unemployment Benefit Over Christmas

The number of Clare people claiming unemployment benefit has dropped by almost 15% since the last Christmas period.

According to the CSO, nearly 4,000 people in this county were on the live register in December.

In total 3,909 people presented at social welfare offices in Clare last month.

The lion’s share went to Ennis, were 1,969 people signed on.

In Ennistymon, 764 presented to the dole queues, followed by 694 in Kilrush and 504 in Tulla.

Each office saw a significant reduction in presentations since December 2023, with a 36% reduction in people signing on in North Clare in the last year, a 12% decrease in the county town, an 11.5% drop in Tulla and just a 6% drop in Kilrush.

There were also just 397 under-25s claiming unemployment benefit here over the Christmas period, which is the second-lowest total in this county since records began in 2002.
