Figures released to the Dáil by Housing Minister Simon Coveney show there are 1,661 children on Clare County Council’s social housing waiting list.

The Council has heretofore counted the number of households or applicants who are seeking supports, a figure which stands at around 2,500.

However, the actual number is much bigger in reality.

Last year’s Summary of Social Housing Assessments found there were at least 500 additional people covered by applications from households with more than one adult, and with the number of children taken into account it brings the total number of people seeking housing here to about 4,700.

This equates to around 4% of the county’s total population.

Also last year, 60 applicants are aged 70 and over and that nearly 300 of those on the list had been waiting for supports for more than seven years.
