More Than 1,500 Patients On Trolleys At UHL In February

More than 1,500 patients were on trolleys at the region’s main hospital in the month of February.

New figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show University Hospital Limerick had figures that were 50 percent higher than any other hospital last month.

The INMO’s monthly Trolleywatch numbers show 1,561 people waiting for beds at UHL last month.

That’s over 500 patients more than the next busiest facility, which was Cork University Hospital.

It’s nearly twice the number of patients who were documented as being on trolleys at University Hospital Galway during the same timeframe.

UHL’s numbers have grown steadily since the INMO began records began in 2006.

This February’s figure in Dooradoyle is a number that has more than doubled since 2017, and is a 70 percent jump since February of 2021.

The union is now calling for ‘medium and long term’ plans to address overcrowding at UHL and elsewhere.

It says an update from both the HSE and the Minister for Health is required as to whether January measures introduced to improve the health system have worked.
