The boy – who can not be named because of his age – has appeared before Limerick District Court.

He’s charged with falsely imprisoning Stephen Cusack at an address at Caislean Na hAibhainn, Castletroy between the 19th and 20th of August.

It’s alleged three men entered the house armed with a knife and handgun and cable-tied and blindfolded Mr Cusack and a second man who were then taken to a derelict house and that there was an intention to get a large sum of money from Mr Cusack’s family.

Detective Garda Ivan Muldoon said the boy replied ‘I’m sorry’ when he was formally charged with the offence yesterday evening in front of his parents, both of whom were in court today.

Objecting to bail the Detective said the boy has a drug addiction, is very easily led and has been involved with serious criminals.

He described the alleged offence as ‘a very nasty crime.’ which he also said could be referred to as a tiger kidnapping.

Sgt Donal Cronin said it is rare to object to bail for a juvenile offender but this case is different because of the very nature of the offence.

Solicitor Sarah Ryan – who was assigned asked the judge to impose bail with conditions saying if he breaks them he can go back to jail.

Judge John O’Neill granted bail with strict conditions including a condition to stay away from Castletroy, Garryowen and Pennywell Rd and not to associate with known criminals.

The accused is due before the court again on October 23rd.
