15% Of Clare Homes Given Top BER Built In 1977 Or Before

15% of homes given the highest building energy rating this year were built in 1977 or before.

The latest data published by the Central Statistics Office shows of the domestic buildings here audited for energy efficiency in 2025 to date, one quarter received a ‘C’ rating.

The figures show that 2,673 energy efficiency audits took place in Clare up to the end of September.

The most common BER received was ‘C’, with 25% of dwellings getting this rating, followed by B3 at 12% and A2, also at 12%.

Just 4% of non-domestic buildings were given the highest rating of A1, with the vast majority of these built since 2015.

Surprisingly, just shy of 15% of those on which the ‘A1’ rating was bestowed were built between 1700 and 1977.

Detached homes accounted for the greater part of the premises assessed for energy efficiency in the period in question, while semi-detached houses and mid-terrace dwellings were also high on this list.

Homes built between 1978 and 1999 made up a whole 28% of those which received a BER in the first nine months of the year.

The data also reveals that heating oil was the fuel of choice for 57% of homes assessed while LPG was the least popular choice, used by just 2%.
