15 Clare households have so far been able to retain their tenancies under the tenant in-situ scheme.

The scheme was introduced by government in April of 2022 in order to stem the rising tide of eviction notices issued nationwide.

The initiative is designed to support those who are unable to source a mortgage and are judged to be in danger of homelessness.

Households also must be on the social housing list or availing of HAP or RAS and have no other alternative accommodation available after receiving a notice to quit.

For those eligible, the local authority will attempt to purchase the property from the landlord and then rent it back to the existing tenant.

So far in Clare, 15 households have been successful in retaining their accommodation under the scheme, while the Housing Agency is currently making progress with another six.

Only five clients that presented have so far failed to qualify for the support in this county as they were above the income limit for social housing, but they were all subsequently referred to the cost-rental tenant in-situ scheme.

Households will be refused for both schemes though if they’ve been issued with a notice to quit for breaching tenancy rules.

So far this year 83 people, 53 in January and a further 30 in February contacted Clare’s Homeless Action Team with concerns including termination notices, domestic issues, dependency issues and damage to homes.

In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says most were supported with advice and guidance and did not have to be referred to emergency accommodation.
