Miltown Women Granted Custody Of Twin Babies Born Through Surrogacy

A West Clare woman has spoken of her joy after being granted guardianship of her twin babies who were born through a surrogate in Mumbai, India.

Fiona Whyte from Miltown Malbay now has the right to make decisions about her children’s religiuos and secular education, health requirements and welfare, though is not legally recognised as the children’s mother.

It follows the introduction of the Children and family Relationships Act, which allows guardianship two years after the baby has been cared for by the applicant.

It was the first case of it’s kind and while Fiona says it was a long and difficult journey, it’s one she doesn’t regret.
