Ennis Circuit Court has heard that a frightened couple fled their home after the package was sent to them in January 2012.

48-year-old Brendan Mahoney of 74 Cabra Park, Dublin 7 had denied sending the pig's head to the Kilkee home of Garda Paul Heaslip and his wife, Natalie O’Neill.

A jury found him guilty of the offence last month, after just 44 minutes of deliberations.

Ms O’Neill told his trial that she was ‘afraid’, ‘disgusted’ and ‘horrified’ when she saw the gruesome parcel, while she and her husband subsequently left their home and requested job transfers away from West Clare.

At yesterday's sentencing hearing, the court heard an apology on behalf of Mr. Mahoney to the couple, who says he accepts the verdict and won't appeal his sentence.

Brendan Mahoney was initially due to stand trial in 2013, but skipped bail before he was extradited back here from Spain.

He was handed two-years imprisonment, with the final year suspended, and his jail term has been back-dated to January 8th of this year when Mr Mahoney was taken into custody in Spain.
