More than a thousand staff in the HSE West call in sick everyday costing the taxpayer five million euro a month.
The figures were revealed to members of the Health Forum West this week by HSE management who say that that one in every 20 employees — call in sick each day in a swathe of the country that stretches from Clare and Limerick to Donegal.

It’s estimated that the total annual cost to the taxpayer is 60 million euro, however the executive says a comprehensive plan’s in place to address this.
