11% Of Clare Parking Fines Overturned On Appeal In 2024

The number of parking fines issued by Clare County Council fell by more than a third in the last year.

New figures show that more than 10% of fines issued by the local authority were successfully overturned on appeal.

The lion’s share of parking violations were recorded in Ennis, where 1,880 fines were dished out throughout the year.

Of those, more than half were for not paying for parking in a fee paying site.

There was also a rise in the number of people fined for parking in a disabled bay without a permit in the county town, with the local authority issuing 152 fixed charge notices for the offence, which is up 9%.

In Doolin, 368 fines were issued over the year, two-thirds of which were for non-payment, while a further 56 were for parking on a double yellow line.

Similar trends were seen in Lahinch were 198 fixed charge notices were dished out over the year.

45 fines were given to motorists in Miltown Malbay, here the most egregious offences were parking in a loading bay resulting in 17 fines, while 11 more were given to drivers judged to have endangered traffic.

Ennistymon also had 45 fines in total, the most common offence here was not having a tax disc on display, resulting in 15 fines there and 365 countywide.

38 fines were issued in Kilrush, where unauthorised parking in a disabled bay accounted for 18 violations.

18 fines were issued in Kilkee over the year, along with 10 at the Cliffs of Moher and just 3 in Lisdoonvarna.

In total, Clare County Council issued 2,605 parking fines last year, which is down 33% on 2023’s total.

Overall the local authority collected €107,977 and 119 unpaid fines were taken to court.

While, 291 fines were successfully overturned on appeal.

Clare County Council employs 1 full-time supervisory traffic warden and 3 full-time traffic wardens in Ennis.

North Clare is policed by 1 full-time traffic/litter warden and 1 part-time traffic warden.

West Clare’s complement includes 1 full-time traffic/litter warden.

The Cliffs of Moher has 2 part-time seasonal traffic wardens.
